Last night we watched American Sniper and I was reminded so powerfully why films are so vital despite this fast paced access-all-areas internet age. It’s the sheer emotional power of the detailed “as it is so” storytelling. Yes, we can see vivid videos of close combat warfare, read books, articles and watch documentaries. But its the emotional connection of great cinematic epics with films such as these which leave us, the audience, with enhanced understanding of an event or experience. Especially with the modern style of hand held cameras and HD. Saving Private Ryan, Schindler’s List, Hurt Locker and The Pianist all sit in the same realm of such life-changing cinematic experiences. Thank you Hollywood. It may start to seem old fashioned to our children. But I say long live the film.
